Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said on Tuesday that he and his country's newly appointed armed forces commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, had "a clear and substantive conversation" with NATO Gen. Christopher Cavoli and US Lt. Gen. Antonio Aguto, the Reuters news agency reported.

"We discussed our military plans for 2024," Umerov said in a Facebook post, as the war with Russia nears its third year.

He added that Syrskyi "announced the priorities," which include "the optimization of the structure of the Armed Forces, improvement of the quality of training of our military, additional staffing of existing brigades and creation of new ones, supplying of regular needs in weapons and equipment."

The talks also focused on Ukraine's need for more electronic warfare equipment to combat Russian drones and the importance of rotating soldiers on the front lines, Umerov said, as cited by Reuters.

Syrskyi was promoted to commander of the Ukrainian armed forces by President Volodymyr Zelensky last week.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Wednesday is day 721 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
